What is Qlaira?

Qlaira is an effective medication that women over the age of 18 can buy online here at Medilico to successfully prevent pregnancy. This birth control medication is taken orally in the form of a 3mg combined contraceptive pills containing the active ingredients estradiol valerate and dienogest. Qlaira tablets should be taken once a day over the course of 28 days. This is because it mimics changes in hormone levels during the menstrual cycle. This lowers the chances of experiencing side effects associated with other contraceptive medications. On top of the ability to prevent pregnancy, Qlaira combined contraceptive pills can alleviate painful periods and can reduce the flow of heavy periods.

How does Qlaira work?

Qlaira is a hormonal contraceptive that contains the two female sex hormones; namely the estrogen estradiol and progesterone dienogest. These two synthetic hormones prevent ovulation and make the uterus lining unfavorable for implantation of a fertilised egg. These hormones also increase the viscosity of the mucus, which blocks the uterine opening, making it difficult for sperm to cross from the vagina into the uterine cavity to fertilise the egg.

When Qlaira is taken regularly the menstrual bleeding is much lighter and less painful. This medication is also prescribed for women who have heavy painful and irregular menstrual cycles.

How to take Qlaira

Each packet of Qlaira contains four active tablets, each with a slightly different concentration of hormones. There are a total of 28 tablets; there are two dark yellow tables, five light red tablets, 17 light yellow tablets, 2 dark red tablets and 2 inactive white tablets. You start with the tablet marked one and the blister pack also comes with a calender, so you know what day you are starting. As long as you take the 28 tablets you will be protected from pregnancy. You start the next cycle after the 28th pill. It is important to take the pill at the same time every day. If you develop nausea, the pills can be taken with food.

When can I start taking Qlaira?

If this is the first time you are starting on a hormonal contraceptive, you should take the first pill on the day one of your menstrual cycle. This will protect you from pregnancy immediately and there is no need to use any extra contraception. However, if you start the pill on any other day or have been using only a progesterone only contraceptive pill, you must use a condom for the next 9 days or not have sex.

If you have had a miscarriage or an abortion, you can take Qlaira immediately and you will be protected against a pregnancy.

If you have just had a baby but are not breastfeeding, you can take the pill on days 21 to 28 after the birth and you will be protected against pregnancy. There is no need for any extra contraception. However, if you start taking Qlaira after day 28, then you will need some type of contraceptive protection for the first 9 days after you start Qlaira.

What do I do if I miss a pill?

There are 26 coloured active pills and 2 white inactive pills in the packet. These pills must be taken in the order specified in the blister packet. If you do not remember to take the two white inactive pills, it does not matter- you will still be protected against pregnancy. However, if you forget to take one active pill, then you should take it as soon as you can remember it. However, if the time is too close the dose of the second pill, then you have to take both pills in one day. You should then continue as normal. If you miss more than one pill, then you should speak to your healthcare provider. It is highly recommended that you do not take more than 2 pills in one day.

If you are ever more than 12 hours late when taking your pill, you may not always be protected against pregnancy. It all depends on where you are in the cycle. In such cases, speak to your doctor. If you do have sex before speaking to your doctor, use a condom for protection.

What if I'm vomiting or have diarrhoea?

Some women may vomit after taking a pill. If you vomit less than 3 hours after taking the pill, it may not be absorbed and hence you need to take another pill as soon as you are feeling fine. Take the next pill according to schedule. If you have severe diarrhoea that lasts more than 24 hours, your pill may not be absorbed. In such scenarios, you should act as if you missed taking the pill.

Qlaira Side Effects

Just like other medications, there is a possibility that you will experience side effects when taking Qlaira pills. If any side effects do occur they are likely to only be mild in nature, if they even occur at all.

Some of the side effects of Qlaira include abdominal cramps, a decreased libido, dryness of the eyes (making it difficult to wear contact lenses), a mild increase in blood pressure, nipple tenderness or breast discomfort, a disturbance in liver function, headaches, mood changes, nausea and vomiting, a risk of developing gallstones, skin problems (e.g. acne or changes in skin color), irregular menstrual bleeding, premenstrual syndrome or retention of water that is most noticeable around the ankles.

These side effects do not occur in all women. The majority of these occur within the first 2 months and then subside. However, if these side effects persist, it is important to speak with your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Qlaira Precautions

Before you buy Qlaira combined contraceptive pills online there are a number of precautions that you should take into account, including the following:

  • This contraceptive pill will not provide any protection against sexually transmitted infections. Thus, if you have sex with an unknown partner, condom use is recommended.
  • Most women who use Qlaira will initially experience menstrual irregularities that may include breakthrough or spotty bleeding or even a missed period. However, this only occurs for a few months. If you do not have a period for more than 2 consecutive months, you must see your doctor and undergo a pregnancy test.
  • Women who use Qlaira have a small risk of developing a blood clot in the leg. This clot can sometimes break off and go to the lung, brain or your heart. The risk of developing a blood clot is greater in women over the age of 35, smokers and those who are obese.
  • The risk of blood clot formation is increased with Qlaira if you have any surgery or are involved in trauma followed by prolonged bed rest. In such cases, your doctor may stop your birth control pill until you recover. In the meantime, you will have to use another form of contraception
  • If you plan to go a long distance by car or via air, you must walk around every hour. Because the risk of a blood clot is increased, you may need to wear compressions stockings on your journey.
  • There is a small risk that some women may develop breast or cervical cancer. Hence it is vital that you regularly follow up with your doctor. Your healthcare provider may perform a pap smear and perform a thorough breast exam.
  • Anytime you develop a swollen calf, pain in the leg, chest pain, shortness of breath, seizures or severe headaches, you should stop Qlaira and see your doctor.
  • Qlaira may cause the growth of masses in the liver. Even though these masses are benign, they can rupture and cause severe bleeding. Thus if you ever develop pain below the right ribs or become jaundiced (yellow), you should see your doctor.

Who should not take Qlaira?

Qlaira combined contraceptive pills may not be suitable for the following individuals:

  • The pill should not be taken by women who are breastfeeding.
  • Women with a prior history of a blood clot or a clot in the lungs (pulmonary embolism).
  • Women who smoke or have a history of blood clots in the family.
  • Women with a history of heart disease or stroke.
  • Postmenopausal women or children less than 18 years of age.
  • Women with uncontrolled diabetes or with complications of diabetes like kidney failure, eye problems, or poor blood supply to the legs.
  • Those who have migraines.
  • Women with breast cancer.
  • Women with an unknown cause of vaginal bleeding.
  • Women with active liver disease or gallstones.
  • Qlaira should not be consumed by women who are allergic to oestrogen or progesterone or to any of the ingredients in the formula.

Other medication interactions

There is a chance that Qlaira can interact with other medications. Thus, before you take the pill, tell the pharmacist or your doctor about all the medications, herbs and supplements that you take. If there is a chance of any interaction, you may have to stop the pill or the dose may have to be altered.

The following drugs can reduce the effectiveness of Qlaira and is not recommended for patients who use them regularly:

  • Aprepitant
  • Bosentan
  • Barbiturates
  • Carbamazepine
  • Cobicistat
  • Crizotinib
  • Dabrafenib
  • Eslicarbazepine
  • Modafinil
  • Nevirapine
  • Oxcarbazepine
  • Perampanel (12mg)
  • Phenobarbital
  • Phenytoin
  • Primidone
  • Rifampicin
  • Rifabutin
  • Ritonavir
  • Rufinamide
  • Telaprevir
  • St John's wort
  • Topiramate
  • Vemurafenib

Rifampicin or rifabutin, are two antibiotics that make the pill ineffective and there is a need to use additional contraceptive methods if using these two drugs. However, other antibiotics do not have the same effect and there is generally no need to use other methods of contraception if you're using any other antibiotics excluding rifampicin or rifabutin.
