What is Aldara?

If used correctly this topical cream can completely clear external genital warts by about 16 weeks. Men and women over the age of 18 can buy Aldara 5% topical cream online to successfully treat external genital warts, however, there isn't a cure for herpes papilloma virus (HPV) as it is a viral infection. Whilst Aldara 5% cream can be used to treat skin conditions, such as non-hyperkeratotic and non-hypertrophic actinic keratosis, as well as sun damage, Medilico only prescribes Aldara 5% cream for the treatment of external genital warts. On top of being able to clear genital warts quickly, Aldara 5% cream can effectively alleviate any painful and uncomfortable symptoms caused by this condition, including soreness, itchiness and inflammation. This medication effectively treats genital warts by helping the body to produce natural chemicals that can attack the virus causing this condition.

How does Aldara work?

Aldara (imiquimod) 5% cream works to treat genital warts (also referred to as condylomata acuminata) but isn't considered a cure for herpes papilloma virus (HPV), which is the virus responsible for causing this condition. Aldara topical cream contains the active ingredient imiquimod that stimulates the body's natural defence mechanisms. It binds to immune cells found in the skin that causes them to release cytokines, which are natural defence chemicals. These chemicals fight against viral infections by stopping them from multiplying in cells. The active ingredient imiquimod can also prevent an increase in the production of malignant or abnormal cells. Aldara cream cures warts caused by herpes papilloma virus (HPV) by attacking the virus as a result of stimulating immune cells in the skin.

Using Aldara cream correctly

In order to use Aldara (imiquimod) cream correctly to effectively treat genital warts you should avoid contact with your eyes, nostrils and lips. If contact is made accidentally you can wash the cream off with water. Aldara cream should never be applied internally and you should never use more cream than has been advised by the doctor. Aldara cream should not be applied to broken, irritated or wounded skin.

Also, the treatment area shouldn't be covered with bandages or any other dressings after you have applied the cream. If the site of treatment becomes uncomfortable you can simply wash the cream off with some mild soap and water. You should open a new sachet each time you use this cream and avoid using an open sachet at a later date.

If you experience an abnormal blood count during the treatment process you should speak to your doctor to get medical advice.

In order to store Aldara (imiquimod) topical cream correctly it should be stored at above 25°C and should be kept out of the reach and sight of children. The sachets of Aldara cream should not be used after the expiry date, which is displayed clearly on the label. This medicine should not be disposed of via the sink or household waste. In order to protect the environment it is recommended that you can talk to a pharmacist to discover the best way to dispose of the medicine, should you no longer require it.

Aldara dosages

Currently, there is only one standard dosage of Aldara (imiquimod) cream that you can buy here at Medilico. Each sachet of Aldara contains 12.5mg (5%) of the active ingredient imiquimod in 250mg of the white / yellow cream. Each pack of Aldara contains 12 sachets in total, which should last for a total of 16 weeks. When Aldara cream is used correctly in this dose it effectively treats your case of genital warts. If after using this cream in the recommended dose provided you find that it isn't effective or causes any significant side effects you can obtain a different strength (i.e. 3.75% Zyclara) from your doctor or local GP.

Aldara side effects

As with other prescription medications Aldara (imiquimod) cream does come with a risk of potential side effects when used by adults to treat genital warts. The side effects that can be caused by this treatment are generally recognised as being mild in nature and are unlikely to occur in the first place. Some of the common side effects that may occur for a small percentage of men and women who buy Aldara cream could include the following:

  • Flu-like symptoms (sore throat, stuffy nose and sneezing)
  • Itching
  • Burning sensation

These common side effects are very manageable if they do indeed occur. Some of the more rare side effects that can be caused by Aldara cream are chest pain, vaginal pain, bleeding, blistering, severe irritation, breathing difficulties, swelling of the face / throat / lips, a rash or an allergic reaction. If you experience any of the rare side effects listed above it is recommended that you should seek immediate advice from a medical professional.

Aldara precautions

Before you choose to buy Aldara (imiquimod) topical cream to treat genital warts it's vital that you carefully consider the precautions when using it. The precautions that should be followed before you place your order for this genital warts treatment are as follows:

  • Don't use this treatment if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Methyl hydroxybenzoate (E218) and propyl hydroxybenzoate (E216) in particular are known to potentially cause allergic reactions (possibly delayed). Other ingredients found in Aldara (imiquimod) cream include isostearic acid, benzyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, white soft paraffin, polysorbate 60, sorbitan stearate, glycerol, xanthan gum and purified water.
  • Avoid sexual intercourse until the area of treatment has completely healed.
  • All of the cream solution should be washed off with mild soap and water in the morning and prior to sexual intercourse.
  • Harsh sunlight, tanning beds and sunlamps should be avoided when using Aldara cream.
  • Seek medical advice before using this treatment if your warts are located inside the anus, urinary tract or vagina. This is particularly important if you are feeling discomfort.
  • Caution should be taken if you have recently had an organ transplant surgery. This is also the case for individuals with a weakened immune system or an inflammatory skin condition.
  • Uncircumcised men who have genital warts under their foreskin should take caution when using Aldara cream.
  • Caution should also be taken during pregnancy and when breastfeeding.
  • Caution should be taken if you have ever experienced any difficulties with your immune system (e.g. if you are immunosuppressed or if you have an autoimmune disease).
  • Aldara cream may damage latex condoms and diaphragms; potentially harming their effectiveness when attempting to prevent pregnancy and the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
  • This treatment may not be fully effective when treating genital warts for individuals who are HIV positive.
  • Caution should be taken if you have low levels of one or more types of blood cells in your blood.

If you are currently dealing with a condition that isn't mentioned above you should include this when filling out your online consultation form after you choose to buy Aldara cream. It should be noted that Aldara cream treats the most recent bout of genital warts but does not cure the virus causing them (herpes papillomavirus, also referred to as HPV). This virus strain is considered to be incurable.

Other medication interactions

At this current moment in time, no studies have been carried out to see if any medications interact negatively with Aldara (imiquimod) topical cream. However, it is recommended that patients should not buy this treatment if they are using immunosuppressive medications. This is due to Aldara cream immunostimulating properties.

So, whilst there are no known negative interactions that should be avoided it is still important that you mention any treatments that you are currently using when you complete your online consultation. This is so our UK registered doctors can ensure your safety when using Aldara cream to treat genital warts.
